The first in a family of ten children, Kephas Munga was born in Chinoyi,
Zimbabwe in 1963. Having attended primary school in Chinoyi from the age of
eight, he went on to secondary studies at Tsungai Study Group in nearby
Banket. Shortly after he finished his schooling in 1986, he met Akence Makore,
one of Zimbabwe's foremost sculptors, and began sculpting in stone.
Munga worked with Makore for three years in Guruve before moving to his own
premises to sculpt by himself.
Now married and with two children, Kephas lives a simple traditional life in the hills of the Guruve area. His wife, a women deeply committed to the Shona cultural tradition, is keenly supportive of his work. Over the years, he has worked to develop a distinctive and powerful form, occasionally using the polychromatic stone to be found in the immediate area of his home, but prefering the hardest varieties of serpentine for their resistance.
Kephas Munga has participated in several group exhibitions in Zimbabwe, and is gaining widespread recognition for his profound talent. Munga feels that family tragedies, including his parents' deaths in 1990, have had a profound influence on his work. The focus of his art is to remind people, both his own, and those visiting Zimbabwe, of the strength and relevance of Shona culture and history.
