Josiah Chigodora is one of the exceptionally talented sculptors in Zimbabwe who
is just now attaining international recognition. Previously his works have sold
extremely well in Zimbabwe and South Africa. We are delighted to have acquired so
many of his pieces over the past few years and to make them available to
collectors in the United States.
Josiah was born in the incredibly beautiful town of Mutare, nestled in the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe. The magnificent mountains and outcroppings of granite in this region are steeped in folklore and tradition and are the birthplace for modern day Shona Sculpture.
Born in 1952, Josiah started sculpting in 1974. His work was immediately well received but international sanctions imposed on Rhodesia stopped the export of the sculpture and Josiah took a position teaching with the Ministry of Education.
With sanctions over, Josiah resumed his sculpting and has been doing so full time since 1986. As a measure of his success, Josiah has been able to buy a farm and is a proud coffee and tea farmer when not sculpting. Josiah works closely with his wife, Naune, who finishes most of his works by doing the meticulous polishing.
