A Shona of the Zezuru tribe, Isaac Chirovapasi was born in 1962 in the
Guruve District of Zimbabwe. Unable to pursue his studies to secondary
level, he left school after completing only his primary education.
It was in 1987 that, with the support of other Guruve artists, he began
sculpting in stone. Married and with four children, he continues to
live in his home district.
Because of their inherent strength, Chirovapasi uses springstone and the harder varieties of serpentine and describes his art as "spiritual abstracts". There is a legendary quality to his work which emphasizes characters from old tales which have been passed down through the generations. Chirovapasi has taken part in the annual Zimbabwe Heritage Exhibition since 1989. In 1992, he received a "Highly Commended" award for his serpentine sculpture, "Diviner".
