Esther Njeri Karinge (left) was born in Limuru, Kenya and is of the tribe
known as Kikuyu. She is the first child in a family of seven. As a Kikuyu, she was
given the middle name Njeri - one of only nine middle names shared by all women of
her tribe. The names are those of the nine original wives of the first Kikuyu. The
names are not selected but are past on from mother to daughter.
Inspired by traditional designs, Njeri has been creating handmade jewelry and banana leaf wall hangings since 1985. Today she has a small shop in the village of Karen, Kenya where she offers her own art as well as selected works by several other Kenyan artisans.
